The Importance of Education
The Torah tells us in Bereishis 4:17 that Kayin fathered a son who he named Chanoch. He further built a city which he also named Chanoch.
One might wonder, why Kayin seemed to be fixated on this name. What did the name Chanoch represent to Kayin that he felt it necessary to use it as the name of both his son and the city he built?
Perhaps, we could explain, that Kayin's fixation with this name stemmed from a sin which he had committed earlier and was truly sorry for. Kayin had killed his brother Hevel in a act of jealous rage and was punished by G-d for his actions. The word Chanoch has the same letters as the word chinuch which means to educate or to teach. Kayin wanted to let the world know that had he been given a proper chinuch (education), had he been taught properly, he would never have perpetrated such a heinous crime. By naming his son and this city Chanoch he wanted to create a long lasting memorial that would underscore the importance of giving our children a proper education.
